Luchon – Top Tourist Destination in Midi-Pyrénées

Luchon in the Pyrenees at the southernmostpoint of the Haute-Garonne Department, stands at the heart of a majesticmountain setting, where the Pyrenees work their magic. It is surroundedby the mountain range’s 13 most famous peaks.

The town centre is built around the Allées d’Etigny, an area packed with restaurants, bars and shops. This promenade was named after the Baron d’Etigny, the man who put Luchon on the map and developed the town in the 1760s, and leads to the thermal baths district, which stretches out across the centenary Quinconces Park.

Luchon was already renowned for its baths in the Gallo-Roman period and became a very popular destination among high society from the 18th century onwards. The town has played host to a long list of distinguished guests, ranging from Richelieu to Napoleon III, and including Alexandre Dumas, Gustave Flaubert and Sacha Guitry, the famous French actor.

Last bastion where still live the Pyrenees bears, several sites classified as “Natura 2000” for their flora and fauna interest are in close proximity and promise of beautiful expeditions. The high valleys of Oô, Pique, Garonne and the areas of the “Marignac” Saint-Beat, mountain Rié are part of those exceptional places that sublimate your hiking.

Aran Park is located 8 km from the camping nearby the pass of Portillon. You can discover the wildlife of the mountains playing in semi freedom in an area of 50 acres where streams flow peacefully and where animals come to drink.

A fifteen species are present in Aran Park: Bear, Lynx, various ungulates … amazing , majestic, fascinating, intriguing and funny animals.

You meet them in this natural setting, while taking the time to observe. This walk last about 2 hours and is punctuated by carefully landscaped areas that allowing you to see the animals evolve in this exceptional natural environment.

Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges

Located at 30 km of Luchon, the magnificent village of Saint Bertrand de Comminges is a former Roman town – Lugdunum-Convenae – with 2,000 years of history and full of Gallo-Roman remains.

The Cathedral of Saint Bertrand de Comminges, the origins of which date back to the Early Middle Ages, continually had further architectural and decorative elements added to it until the 16th century.

Below the narrow medieval streets of Saint Bertrand, the Basilica of Saint Just de Valcabrère rises from the surrounding meadows.

Built on the site of a Roman necropolis, this Romanesque church is distinctive in that its architecture contains a number of elements re-used from earlier buildings, giving it an undeniably original appearance.
